Studia 54’s projects in India demonstrate a comprehensive architectural approach — from working with the site and climate to integrating cultural and philosophical principles. Each project is a universal architectural solution in the studio’s signature style, reflecting the rhythm of life of the client and their family.
Scale: Architecture of Large Spaces
Contemporary private residences in India are distinguished by their exceptional scale. Home sizes range from 500 m² to 10,000 m², allowing architecture to be conceived as a spatial structure with complex living scenarios. Such residences often include multiple living rooms, event spaces, recreational areas, private zones, and expansive outdoor terraces.
One of the key features of the Panchgani project was its impressive scale — nearly 10,000 m² — which required a distinct architectural approach. This scale enabled the Studia 54 team to create a residence where public and private functions exist within a clear hierarchy. The layout allows the home to function equally well for family life and large-scale receptions, while maintaining a sense of unity and architectural order.
Climatic Context
India’s climate largely defines architectural solutions. Mild winters, warm evenings, and more than 300 sunny days a year allow for the active use of outdoor spaces, water features, and landscaping. Architecture here does not isolate itself from nature but becomes its continuation.
In the 3,000 m² villa project with a private water feature, Studia 54 used the site’s climatic characteristics as the foundation of the concept. The pool, water surface, and lush tropical greenery became integral elements of the architectural composition. The house is designed so that interior spaces visually and functionally flow into the landscape, creating a constant connection with nature.
Light Southern Homes and Eastern Motifs
Southern Indian architecture has traditionally been built around light, air, and shade. Contemporary homes preserve this logic while interpreting it through minimalist forms and clean volumes. Light-colored façades, deep overhangs, and a rhythmic interplay of verticals and horizontals create architecture adapted to a sunny climate.
In the Vasant Kunj villa project, Studia 54 integrated traditional Eastern motifs into a contemporary architectural form. Ornamentation, proportions, rhythms, and plasticity characteristic of Oriental architecture are subtly embedded into the design. The house remains modern while being organically connected to the cultural context of the region.
The Culture of Club Houses
Indian architecture often perceives the home as a social space. A private residence frequently functions as a club house — a place for meetings, celebrations, official events, and the family’s public life. This creates specific requirements for planning, the scale of public zones, and their relationship with the landscape.
In one of Studia 54’s contemporary residence projects, the primary client request was the ability to host distinguished guests. Reception areas, terraces, and recreational spaces were organized so that the house could accommodate a large number of people without compromising the privacy of the residential blocks.
Layout Solutions and Vastu Principles
Vastu philosophy remains an essential part of architectural design in India. It defines the orientation of the house, the placement of key zones, and the flow of energy within the space. In contemporary projects, these principles are interpreted through architectural logic rather than literal adherence to canon.
In the Kolkata residence project, Studia 54 developed the layout in accordance with Vastu principles: the central space of the house was left open, with zones of varying privacy organized around it. This approach made it possible to create a harmonious structure in which philosophy, functionality, and contemporary architecture operate as a unified system.
Contemporary architecture in India is defined by scale, climate, cultural traditions, and a highly individualized approach to lifestyle. Studia 54’s projects demonstrate how these elements can be integrated into a cohesive architectural concept, where each home becomes a reflection of place, family, and time.
