How to Use Natural Stone in Interior Design

Selecting materials for an interior is one of the most complex and precise design tasks. Operating conditions, expected loads, humidity levels, lifestyle scenarios, and material durability always become the starting point of the design process. Only after these factors are carefully considered does a material become part of the interior’s visual concept.

The Studia 54 team includes over 200 specialists — true professionals in their field. Our designers and procurement experts have in-depth knowledge of the technical properties of each material, while our managers help clients choose solutions that best suit their specific needs.

With our own 2,000 m² production facility, we work with materials on a technological and practical level. This allows us to understand how they behave over time, in different climates, and under varying levels of use.

In this article, we explain how to use natural stone in interior design, which types we most often select for their outstanding performance characteristics, and which varieties become full-fledged art objects in our projects.

Characteristics of Natural Stone

Natural stone is one of the few materials that simultaneously meets the requirements of aesthetics, durability, and status. It is precisely this combination of qualities that makes it especially valuable in premium interiors.

High wear resistance and an impressive lifespan allow stone to be used in both private residences and high-traffic commercial spaces. With the correct selection of stone type and professional processing, it retains its properties for decades — and in some cases for more than 50 to 100 years — without losing its visual expressiveness or structural integrity.

Another important advantage is moisture resistance. Many types of natural stone withstand humidity and temperature fluctuations well, making them suitable for bathrooms, spa areas, swimming pools, and kitchens. With proper waterproofing and surface protection, stone remains stable even under challenging operating conditions.

Tactility and visual depth play a special role. Patterns, veining, structural variations, and in the case of onyx, translucency, cannot be artificially replicated. Stone always feels “alive” and creates a sense of authenticity within the space.

Where Natural Stone Is Appropriate in an Interior

In Studia 54 projects, natural stone is never used randomly or fragmentarily. It becomes an integral part of the overall interior concept and contributes to a cohesive spatial image.

In living rooms and dining areas, stone often serves as a compositional focal point — fireplace surrounds, accent walls, bar counters, countertops, or art objects around which the interior is built. In these spaces, stone emphasizes the status of the interior and defines its character.

In bathrooms and spa zones, tactile sensations, comfort, and a sense of private luxury come to the forefront. Natural stone makes it possible to create a resort-like atmosphere of visual calm while fully meeting functional requirements.

In kitchens, stone is valued for both its practicality and expressiveness. Natural stone countertops and backsplashes withstand daily use and maintain their aesthetic appeal even after years of operation.

In bedrooms, stone is used more delicately — in headboards, decorative panels, and niches.

In commercial interiors such as hotels, restaurants, and private clubs, natural stone becomes a marker of the project’s level, emphasizing durability, prestige, and thoughtful design.

Types of Natural Stone in Studia 54 Projects

We work with a wide range of stone varieties, selecting them not only for appearance but also for performance characteristics, density, structure, and intended use.

Marble

A versatile material with a rich color palette and intricate veining. Used for floors, walls, countertops, furniture, and decorative elements.

Onyx

A translucent stone ideal for integrated lighting. It often becomes a central art object and is used where emotional impact is essential.

Malachite

A rare and expressive stone with a striking pattern. Applied selectively as a decorative accent or artistic element.

Travertine

A stone with a soft texture and natural porosity. It creates a sense of warmth and architectural restraint and works well in large-scale spaces.

Quartzite

Highly durable and resistant to wear. Used in areas with increased load while maintaining a refined appearance.

Granite

A practical and long-lasting material chosen for interiors where maximum durability and structural stability are required.

Semi-precious stones

Used in bespoke solutions and art objects — panels, murals, furniture, and decorative elements created according to Studia 54’s custom designs.

In addition to these varieties, Studia 54 projects often feature custom material combinations tailored individually to each project.

Natural Stone in a Vietnam Apartment Project

In a residential project in Vietnam, natural stone was used in almost every space — both as a decorative feature and as a primary finishing material. The bathrooms, however, became a particular highlight.

In one of them, we used Jade Green onyx for the wall finish, emphasizing its depth with soft integrated lighting. The mirror frame was crafted from Verde Alpi marble, enhancing the sense of cohesion and natural luxury. In this project, stone functions not only as a finish but also as an emotional focal point.

Furniture Made from Natural Stone

In Studia 54 projects, stone is not only a finishing material but also an integral part of the FiftyFourms furniture brand.

Italian textiles, nubuck, natural leather, rare veneer species, and, of course, natural stone — all materials are selected with exceptional care. Stone countertops look particularly striking in living rooms, dining areas, and kitchens, reinforcing the status and integrity of the space.

Caring for Natural Stone

Natural stone retains its expressiveness and depth for decades when properly maintained according to its type and surface characteristics.

Porous stones such as marble, travertine, and onyx require periodic professional treatment with protective impregnations. These reduce moisture absorption and staining while preserving the original appearance.

It is also important to consider stone’s sensitivity to chemicals. Contact with acids, alcohols, and household cleaners can affect the surface and color, especially in light and translucent varieties.

Temperature fluctuations and mechanical stress are likewise taken into account during use. That is why, in high-end interiors, application zones, surface treatments, and installation methods are carefully planned in advance.

With the right selection, proper processing, and professional care, natural stone does not lose its aesthetic qualities over time. On the contrary, it develops a noble patina that emphasizes its status and uniqueness.
