In this article, we explore the master bedroom: how the concept has evolved, the role this space plays in a contemporary interior, and, of course, the signature touches of our studio. We will examine the principles behind the ideal master bedroom design and show how, in Studia 54 projects, it becomes a reflection of our clients’ individuality.
How the Term “Master Bedroom” Originated
Historically, the master bedroom referred to the largest bedroom in the house — the one with the best layout, a private bathroom, and the highest level of comfort. For decades, the term was firmly rooted in private homes and residences, becoming synonymous with the owners’ personal space.
Over time, however, language like design itself has evolved. Along with this shift, the perception of the room changed as well: from a formal “main room,” it transformed into a highly personal interior scenario.

The Master Bedroom as a Key Interior Space
In Studia 54 projects, the master bedroom is always conceived as a self-contained world within the home. Here, we prioritize the sensations that shape our clients’ daily lives: light, tactile materials, acoustic comfort, and morning and evening scenarios.
For example, in a 1,200 m² country house on the banks of the Istra River, the master suite for the parents of a large family was designed as an autonomous, private space for rest and recovery. Every daily scenario was considered — from gentle awakening to calm evening relaxation.

Functionally, the master bedroom is designed not only for sleep, but also for reading, solitude, and time spent together. Lighting scenarios are arranged so that in the morning the space gradually fills with warm light, while in the evening it transitions into a soft, relaxing mode. Acoustics and tactile materials enhance the sense of silence and comfort.
The client’s art collection is integrated into the interior as a meaningful element. An expressive painting by Adele Levitova becomes the visual focal point of the bedroom, emphasizing the individuality of the space.

What Defines a Thoughtfully Designed Master Bedroom
At the core is intelligent planning. We zone the space so that sleep, relaxation, storage, and personal rituals do not conflict with one another. The bed becomes the compositional center, but it is never isolated: its placement is carefully considered in relation to cardinal directions, views, and lighting scenarios.

Storage systems play a crucial role. In Studia 54 projects, the master bedroom is often integrated with a walk-in closet or features built-in wardrobes designed according to custom sketches.

Special attention is given to lighting. We design multiple scenarios: soft evening light, morning light, accent lighting, and functional illumination. Hidden light lines, wall sconces, bespoke fixtures, headboard lighting, and niche illumination allow the space to easily adapt to mood and time of day.

Art objects and lighting installations are another defining element of our master bedroom projects. In a 300 m² apartment in Estonia, for instance, we introduced accent mother-of-pearl beads. The installation resembles amber suspended in midair, with each sphere capturing warm reflections of light, filling the space with coziness and visual allure.

Materials and tactility are equally essential. Natural wood, stone, textiles, leather, and noble metals create a feeling of comfort and protection. The color palette is always selected individually — it can be calm and monochromatic or deeper and more complex, depending on the owners’ preferences.

In our projects, the master bedroom rarely exists without a master bathroom. Together, the bedroom and bathroom form a unified private suite with seamless transitions, coordinated lighting scenarios, and a shared aesthetic. This enhances the sense of seclusion and comfort.

The final touch lies in personal details. Art objects, panels, textiles, bespoke furniture, smart home technologies, and acoustic solutions are integrated in a way that does not overload the space but subtly complements it.
At Studia 54, we design interiors based on your lifestyle and that of your family, taking into account habits, rhythms, and everyday scenarios. As a result, the master bedroom like every space in the home becomes fully ready for living. All that remains is to step inside, feel at home, and live at your own pace.
